Lucid’s New Midsize EV Platform Will Support Three Body Styles—But Sedans Are Out

Lucid Motors is making a decisive shift in its product strategy. The EV startup has confirmed that its upcoming midsize vehicle platform will underpin three different body styles, yet notably, none of them will be sedans. This move reflects changing consumer preferences and Lucid’s focus on scaling sales in a highly competitive EV market.
Sedans No Longer Drive Growth
Lucid built its reputation on the ultra-efficient Air sedan. However, the broader market tells a different story. In recent years, buyers have steadily moved away from sedans in favor of SUVs and crossovers. Because of this trend, Lucid sees limited growth potential in launching another midsize sedan.
Instead, the company is aligning future products with segments that deliver higher demand and better margins.
Three Body Styles, One Flexible Platform
Lucid’s midsize platform is designed to be highly modular. According to company leadership, it will support three distinct vehicle “bodies.” While Lucid has not confirmed exact designs, industry expectations point toward a compact SUV, a crossover, and possibly a performance-oriented or lifestyle vehicle.
This flexible approach allows Lucid to reduce development costs while expanding its lineup faster.
Built for Efficiency and Scale
Efficiency remains Lucid’s strongest advantage. The new platform will benefit from the brand’s compact motors, advanced battery tech, and in-house power electronics. As a result, midsize Lucid EVs should deliver strong range figures without relying on massive battery packs.
At the same time, smaller vehicles allow Lucid to target more affordable price points than the Air or Gravity.
Competing Where the Volume Is
The midsize EV segment is where most global EV growth is happening. Tesla’s Model Y, Hyundai’s Ioniq lineup, and several Chinese EVs dominate this space. Lucid clearly wants a seat at that table.
By skipping sedans entirely, Lucid avoids direct competition with its own Air model while focusing on higher-volume categories.
Manufacturing and Cost Benefits
Producing multiple vehicles from one platform simplifies manufacturing. It also improves supplier efficiency and speeds up time to market. For a company still working toward profitability, this strategy is critical.
Lucid plans to build these midsize EVs at higher volumes than its current models.
What This Means for Lucid’s Future
Dropping sedans from its midsize plans signals a more pragmatic Lucid. The brand still values performance and efficiency, but it now prioritizes market reality. If executed well, this platform could become the foundation for Lucid’s long-term growth.
