The 620-Mile Result: A New Benchmark

During a 1,000 km (621-mile) test conducted by EV enthusiast Bjørn Nyland, the iX3 finished the journey in 8 hours and 55 minutes. While this time tied with the Tesla Model S Long Range and the Zeekr 7X Performance, the BMW achieved it with significantly higher efficiency.

  • Total Time: Under 9 hours, including all charging stops.
  • Stops Required: The iX3 only needed two stops to complete the entire 620-mile trip.
  • Efficiency: The vehicle averaged roughly 2.3 miles/kWh (26.7 kWh/100 km), outperforming competitors even in colder weather conditions.

Efficiency & Tech: The “Heart of Joy”

The iX3’s dominance stems from its brand-new Neue Klasse architecture, which moves away from traditional battery modules in favor of cylindrical cells. This design increases cell-level energy density by 20% compared to previous generations.

  • Centralized Control: A powerful new ECU called the “Heart of Joy” unites acceleration, braking, and steering functions.
  • Regenerative Braking: This centralized system improves regen efficiency by 25%, allowing the car to recapture more energy during decelaration.
  • Total Range: Depending on the configuration, the iX3 offers a WLTP range between 678 km and 805 km (approx. 420–500 miles).

Charging Performance: Up to 400 kW

The challenge was won at the plug just as much as on the road. Because the iX3 utilizes an 800V system, it can accept ultra-fast charging speeds that minimize downtime.

2026 World Car of the Year Status

  • Dual Victory: The iX3 also took home the 2026 World Electric Vehicle award, beating 43 other high-class contenders.
  • Industry Impact: BMW Group Chairman Oliver Zipse was named the 2026 World Car Person of the Year for leading the Neue Klasse transformation.
