General Motors (GM) is charging ahead with a massive technological overhaul. Eyes-Off Autonomy Arrives in 2028

The headline feature is GM’s “eyes-off” autonomous driving system, debuting in 2028. Initially, it will launch on the electric Cadillac Escalade IQ. Importantly, this represents a major leap from the current “hands-free” Super Cruise, which already has 700 million miles of customer use without a crash. With this upgrade, drivers can fully disengage on certain mapped roads, moving GM closer to full autonomy.

Conversational AI: Talking to Your Car

Starting in 2026, GM will integrate Google Gemini, a conversational AI assistant. This allows drivers to use natural language commands, such as navigating traffic or adjusting climate settings. Later, GM will introduce a custom OnStar-powered AI, further personalizing the driving experience. As a result, interaction with GM vehicles will become more intuitive and human-like.

Unified Computing Architecture

To support these advancements, GM is rolling out a new centralized electrical and computational architecture in 2028. This platform unifies propulsion, safety, and infotainment systems on a single core. Consequently, vehicles will gain 10 times more over-the-air update capacity, 1,000 times greater bandwidth, and 35 times more AI performance. Therefore, GM’s cars will continue improving long after purchase.

Proprietary Infotainment: Goodbye CarPlay and Android Auto

GM will phase out Apple CarPlay and Android Auto across its fleet. Instead, it will use its proprietary AI-powered infotainment system, built on Android and integrated with Google Gemini. This switch provides a seamless, deeply integrated, and customizable user experience. Ultimately, the system ties the vehicle experience directly to GM’s AI framework.

AI-Driven Manufacturing

AI is also transforming production. GM is scaling up collaborative robots (cobots) in U.S. assembly plants. These robots, trained on decades of data, enhance efficiency, quality, and precision. As a result, production becomes more flexible and adaptive, critical for building next-generation electric and autonomous vehicles.
