BYD–Toyota EV Joint Venture: Japanese Engineering Meets BYD EV Technology
The BYD Toyota EV Technology Co., Ltd. (BTET) joint venture represents an unusual partnership between two major automotive companies that were once direct competitors. Established in 2020 as a 50:50 joint venture, BTET focuses on the research, design and development of battery-electric vehicles, platforms and related components rather than directly manufacturing vehicles.
The partnership was first announced in 2019, when BYD and Toyota agreed to jointly develop battery-electric sedans, low-floor SUVs and onboard batteries for the Chinese market. Their goal was to combine their respective strengths and bring competitive EVs to Chinese consumers.
How BYD and Toyota Complement Each Other
The partnership works because both companies bring different strengths to the table.
Toyota contributes its expertise in vehicle engineering, safety, quality control, manufacturing and electrified vehicle development. Meanwhile, BYD brings extensive experience in battery-electric vehicles, batteries and EV-related technology.
This combination allows the companies to develop EVs with Toyota’s vehicle engineering and market knowledge while taking advantage of BYD’s experience in electric powertrains and battery technology. What the BYD–Toyota Partnership Has Created
The first major production result was the Toyota bZ3, an electric sedan developed through collaboration between Toyota, BTET and FAW-Toyota. Toyota officially announced the model in 2022, with FAW-Toyota responsible for production and sales in China.
The partnership later expanded into new body styles and newer-generation EVs.

Toyota confirmed that the bZ3C was jointly developed with BTET and FAW-Toyota, while the bZ3X was developed with GAC-Toyota and Toyota’s Chinese R&D operations.
Toyota’s manufacturing information also currently lists bZ3 and bZ5 under FAW-Toyota and bZ3X under GAC-Toyota, showing how the R&D and manufacturing sides of the partnership operate separately.
The important distinction is that BTET itself is an R&D organization. Production is handled through Toyota’s established manufacturing operations in China.
What Comes Next for the Partnership
The collaboration is part of Toyota’s broader strategy to strengthen its EV presence in China. Rather than relying only on a single model, the companies have expanded the collaboration across sedans, crossovers and SUVs.
The Toyota bZ5 represents the newer direction of this strategy, combining Toyota’s vehicle development with BYD-related EV technology. FAW-Toyota currently lists the bZ5 among its production models.
However, the partnership’s future extends beyond the current bZ lineup. Toyota has announced plans to establish a new company in Shanghai to develop and produce Lexus-branded battery-electric vehicles and batteries, with production planned from 2027 onward. Toyota expects initial annual production capacity of around 100,000 vehicles and approximately 1,000 employees at the start.
This Lexus project is separate from the BTET joint venture, but it demonstrates Toyota’s wider push to develop EVs locally for Chinese consumers.
How Both Companies Benefit
For Toyota, the partnership provides access to BYD’s mature EV technology and helps it develop products more quickly for China’s highly competitive electric-vehicle market. It also gives Toyota greater flexibility as it expands its China-specific EV lineup.
For BYD, working with Toyota provides an opportunity to apply its EV expertise within vehicles developed to Toyota’s engineering, quality and safety standards. It also strengthens BYD’s position as a technology partner beyond its own vehicle brand.
Ultimately, the partnership is less about one company replacing the other’s technology and more about combining complementary strengths. Toyota brings decades of automotive engineering and manufacturing expertise, while BYD contributes deep experience in battery-electric technology.
As China’s EV market continues to evolve, this partnership gives both companies a way to develop products faster while adapting them specifically to local consumer demand.
What Customers Can Expect
For customers, the BYD–Toyota partnership could bring more affordable and technology-focused Toyota EVs, particularly in the Chinese market. By combining Toyota’s vehicle engineering with BYD’s EV expertise, the partnership can help deliver vehicles with competitive range, battery technology, performance and smart features.
If these China-focused EVs perform well and Toyota sees demand in other markets, some of the technology or future models could potentially reach international markets. However, Toyota has not confirmed that the current China-specific models will be sold globally.
For now, the partnership gives Toyota a stronger foundation to develop EVs faster and tailor them to changing consumer expectations.
