The UK government has announced a major win for electric vehicle (EV) owners. Specifically, new reforms aim to make home charging fairer, simpler, and more affordable. This is especially important for renters and people without private driveways. Ultimately, these steps remove long-standing barriers and accelerate the nation’s shift to electric.

Breaking Down Barriers to Home Charging

A key focus of the reforms is on-street charging. The government is consulting on removing planning permission for installing discreet cross-pavement charging gullies. Consequently, residents could avoid lengthy applications and costly fees, saving up to US$315 while speeding up installation.

Moreover, this change grants many drivers access to domestic electricity rates. For example, a journey from London to Birmingham could cost only about US$3.15 when using low off-peak tariffs. In comparison, this dramatically undercuts expensive public charging options.

Fairer Access and Stronger Protections

New covered car parks will now be required to include charging points, expanding infrastructure where many renters and leaseholders park.
