Why the Rapid Acceleration?

The government has tipped the economic scales in favor of EVs:

• Reduced Taxes: Gasoline and diesel vehicles face steep import duties of 32%–276%, while EVs enjoy a lower range of just 25%–90%. This makes EVs far more accessible.
• Economic Impact: The surge in EV imports has already generated about NPR 22.76 billion in customs revenue.

Clean, Homegrown Energy

Nepal’s main energy source is hydroelectricity. Since the national grid relies on clean, renewable hydropower, every EV runs on domestic, environmentally friendly energy. Consequently, EV adoption dramatically reduces transportation emissions.

Significant Economic Savings

The shift to electric vehicles also saves money. Nepal is already cutting about $22 million annually in oil imports. For consumers, operating EVs is cheaper than using imported fuel. Therefore, households enjoy long-term savings while the country reduces reliance on volatile global energy markets.

The Road Ahead: Overcoming Challenges

Despite strong momentum, challenges remain. Infrastructure is the biggest hurdle. Nepal needs a widespread charging network and faster electrification of public transport to meet national environmental goals.

Still, the government remains ambitious: aiming for 90% private vehicle electrification and 60% public vehicle electrification by 2030.
